6' Leather Leash

Nothing else has the feel of a genuine leather leash, and it only feels better the longer you use it!

Basic training leashes should be 6 feet in length. Make sure to choose an appropriate width for the size of your dog. Wider leashes are stronger and they are MUCH easier on your hands. The larger your dog, the wider the leash that you need. Suggested sizing:

• Less than 5 pounds: 6'L x 1/4"W
• 6 - 15 pounds: 6'L x 1/2"W
• 16 - 40 pounds: 6'L x 5/8"W
• 41 - 75 pounds: 6'L x 3/4"W
• Over 75 pounds: 6'L x 1"

Just because your dog is obedient at 6 feet, doesn't mean that s/he understands the same behaviors at 15, 30, or 50 feet away from you!

Successful trainers frequently use long lines to help their dogs understand obedience from a distance. Long lines are also useful in teaching your dog to stop pulling on the leash and to come when called.

Training Collars

While not every dog needs a choke chain for training purposes, this type of collar prevents your dog from bolting away from you when frightened. Unlike a buckle collar, the chain tightens around your dog's neck ONLY when your dog pulls against it. When your dog stops pulling, the collar automatically loosens, rewarding your dog for yielding to the pull of the leash.

Remember that the collar must slide over your dog's neck. Purchase a collar that fits your dog by measuring the WIDEST part of your dog's head and adding 2 inches. This will be the correct length of collar. Choose the heaviest link available in the length of collar that you purchase, because WIDER is easier on your dog's neck. Incorrectly fitted collars do not open and close properly, and may diminish the success that you have with using a training collar.

As with any training collar, make sure to remove the slip chain collar from your dog's neck when you cannot directly supervise him, as the collar can present a strangulation hazard.
